Youth
Recently, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) launched a report into the education and career aspirations of 14 to 18 year olds. The report is based on a survey of over 1000 young people, as well as focus groups. Key findings include:
- The vast majority of young people have high aspirations, and are hopeful and optimistic. However, this positive outlook is not shared by all.
- Almost half of all working class girls have a ‘profound fear of failure’; similarly, those from black and minority ethnic groups and those with learning difficulties and/or disabilities were significantly more likely to fear failure.
- Class background is still the strongest indicator of educational attainment.
